English Electric Lightning - Genesis & Projects

First proposed as an idea in 1948 for a fighter aircarft capable of reaching Mach 1.4 with reheat, there were 17 projects which led to the 'Lightning' and to modifications to it attaining the status of the only British designed and built fighter capable of exceeding Mach 2. It was also to remain in service into the late 1980s.

This isn't the story of the aircatft's service, but of its background and development over nearly 30 years. Accesible and interesting, although inevitably technical at times.
