Industrial Railways and Locomotives of South Africa Vol.2

£44.00

Vol. 1 on this subject was superb, and a best-seller, this is even better.

It covers the provinces of Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo in South Africa and Lesotho and Eswatini (Swaziland). Included in these is the Gold mining area around Johannesburg known as the Rand, the industrial railways of which were frequently extensive, and fill a goodly amount of this book.

Huge quantities of photographs, mainly high quality and in colour, although B&W photos of earlier days are also included. Large numbers of maps, and vast, detailed information on mines and other industrial concerns, including the history of their railways and the motive power, steam, internal combustion and electric which powered them. Covers 2 foot, 2ft 6 inch, 3 foot, 3ft 6 inch and even standard European gauges used. Industrail railways in South Africa sold off considerable numbers of their steam locos to industrial concerns, up to modern designs - in the late 1080s GMAM Garrets could be found running at 80 km/h at the head of 1000 tonne ore trains.

489 very well produced pages. Hardbound.
