The English photographer who loved French trains

Charles R. Gordon Stuart was a British photographer born in 1909, who took his first French railway pictures in and around Paris in 1938. After WWII, he was able to return and travel over all the SNCF regions, from 1947 to 1964. He was therefore a privileged witness of how French railways evolved, from the end of the private companies to the decline of steam and the advent of contemporary motive power.

This book is based on a body of period photographs that was made available by Bram van derVelden, in charge of the archives of the French Railways Society. It gives an account of Charles R. Gordon Stuart's railway travels across France, through some 600 previously unpublished monochrome pictures. The captions were written by Luc Fournier, Project Manager for railway heritage with the French Ministry of Cullture.
