KERR, STUART Water-Tube Boiler Geared Drive Steam Locomotives

After the First World War, the Stoke on Trent manufacturer, Kerr, Stuart & Company introduced a design of narrow gauge diesel powered locomotives for industrial use, which enjoyed some success.

At the same time, a steam design was also introduced, based on a water-tube boiler with chain drive, using the same underframe and running gear as the diesel version, and it is these locomotives which are covered here.

Whilst they embodied a number of clever ideas, these were very largely outweighed by design flaws, one very obvious, and only five were built.

Allan C. Baker reviews the design and the modifications in this book which has a good number of B&W photos, as well as drawings of main assembles, the engine, and boilers. But whilst these engines may not have been a success, their design is ideal for the model engineer looking to build a small and compact steam locomotive, from 16mm narrow gauge up to 7 1/4" gauge, probably using a more conventional boiler!
