Of Iron and Steel a Portrait of the Cleator & Workington Junction Railway

The railway map of Cumberland has always been influenced by two natural phenomena, namely minerals & coal, and by the mountains of the Lake District. 

The mountains are still there, but most of the seven pre-grouping railways have gone, leaving abandoned evidence of their existence all over the area.

The railway which this book covers was the last of the major lines built, extending from Cleator Moor in the south, to Linefoot Junction in the north, but running rights gave it running rights to Barrow in the south and Carlisle in the north. The reason it was built, very laregly by local money was the rates charged for moving coal, and ore from the mines to the ports of Whitehaven, Harrington and Whitehaven.

During it's independent years, the line relied on 0-6-0 tank locomotives, plus some 0-6-0 tender ones, but also borrowed locomotives from the Furness Railway in particular.
