Western Yesterdays Voume X; DAVID MOFFAT'S HILL MEN
David Moffatt is one of the legendary figures of Colorado history, as a promoter of railroads, coal and mineral mines, and a thoroughly good egg to boot.
But the railroad that defeated him was the Denver & Salt Lake, which found the Rockies in his way. He wanted to tunnel through them, but couldn't initially raise the money. so for 24 years until 1928, he operated a line over the top of the Rockies some 30 miles long which bridged the 6 or so miles long of the tunnel when it was finally built, reaching an altitude of 11,600 feet. Needless to say the temporary line was a nightmare to operate!
